"Our goal at MUSHFA is to turn zero-value agricultural waste into high-protein, nutrient-dense food through accessible mushroom farming technology across Africa."
MUSHFA recently hosted a hands-on Community Mushroom Farming and Substrate Preparation Workshop, bringing together smallholder farmers, agricultural enthusiasts, and rural community leaders to explore sustainable mushroom cultivation. The workshop focused on converting local agricultural by-products into high-yield growing substrates for gourmet and medicinal mushrooms.
Participants gained practical experience in formulating substrates using crop residues such as wheat straw, corn cobs, sugarcane bagasse, and hardwood sawdust. Proper substrate formulation and pasteurization are crucial steps that ensure optimal mycelium colonization while preventing green mold and bacterial contamination in rural farming setups.

"Our goal at MUSHFA is to turn zero-value agricultural waste into high-protein, nutrient-dense food through accessible mushroom farming technology across Africa."
Through low-cost pasteurization techniques such as hot-water immersion and steam treatment, community farmers learned how to prepare substrate bags without expensive autoclaves. This low-tech, high-efficiency approach enables smallholder farmers to initiate mushroom growing enterprises with minimal capital investment and harvest continuous crops year-round.
Proper incubation room management, maintaining 80-90% relative humidity, and optimizing ventilation during the fruiting stage were key topics covered during the practical sessions. Farmers were shown how to monitor fruiting body growth to achieve maximum crop yields per bag.
MUSHFA continues to provide ongoing technical support, high-yielding grain spawn, and market linkages to all workshop graduates, fostering self-sustaining agricultural cooperatives across the region.
